When it comes to financial advice, one size never fits all — especially here in South Dakota. At Legacy Point Financial, we believe guidance should be as practical and hardworking as the retirees, business owners, and families we serve. That’s why we built a firm with local roots, independent thinking, and a commitment to peace of mind.

Why We Started Legacy Point Financial

Cam Jones, CFP®, CEPA®

Founder and Wealth Advisor Cam Jones, CFP®, CEPA®, launched Legacy Point Financial after years of working inside traditional financial firms. While those firms offered good resources, they also worked in silos: investment guidance in one place, tax prep somewhere else, and estate planning in a different office altogether.

But real financial decisions don’t happen in silos. Each move — whether it’s selling a business, converting a Roth IRA, or transitioning farmland — has tax, investment, and estate implications. Cam saw that too many people were being left with fragmented advice and unintended consequences.

So, he started Legacy Point Financial with a simple promise: to do more for the people we serve by connecting every part of their financial life.

What “Independent” Really Means

We’re proud to be an independent firm. Independence means:

·       We don’t answer to corporate quotas or hidden commissions.

·       We choose solutions that fit your goals—not a sales target.

·       Our loyalty stays with the people who sit across the table from us—we answer only to our clients.

That freedom gives us time to ask better questions, build customized strategies, and help you make decisions with confidence.

Local Roots, Lasting Impact

Being based in Brookings, South Dakota shapes how we serve. Like many of our clients, we value honesty, hard work, and community. The revenue we earn stays right here — supporting local nonprofits, partnering with other small businesses, and reinvesting in the community.

That local connection also gives us a unique perspective. We understand the realities of running a family business in a tight labor market, planning for retirement when most of your wealth is in land or equipment, or navigating succession when heirs are both on-farm and off-farm.

We live here, too. We know the challenges, and we know the opportunities.

Who We Serve

At Legacy Point Financial, we focus on three groups of clients who share one thing in common: they’re looking for straight talk and coordinated planning.

·       Retirees and Pre-Retirees: We build tax-aware income plans so your savings become a steady paycheck you can count on.

·       Exit-Minded Business Owners: We help you protect value, reduce taxes, and prepare for life after ownership.

·       Legacy Stewards: For families with farmland or complex estates, we guide succession conversations and estate structures that preserve wealth and reduce conflict.

Our Process

Financial planning doesn’t have to be overwhelming. We keep it simple:

1. Intro Call: A no-pressure conversation to see if we’re a fit.

2. Planning Framework: A plain-English outline connecting tax, estate, and investment strategies.

3. Ongoing Guidance: Regular check-ins and guardrails to keep your plan on track.

This straightforward process helps you tune out the noise, find clarity, and move forward with greater clarity and informed decision-making.

Why Planning Now Matters

Timing can make all the difference. For retirees, year-end Roth and RMD decisions can impact your paycheck in retirement. For business owners, federal tax laws drive what you keep — even in a no-income-tax state like South Dakota. For families, succession conversations are best had before circumstances force the issue.

The earlier you start, the more options you’ll have.

The Legacy Point Promise

At the end of the day, financial planning isn’t just about numbers — it’s about people. It’s about helping you consider ways to safeguard what you’ve built, support your family, and plan toward the future you envision.

Our promise is simple: we’re here to serve you—with independence, clarity, and a local touch.
